We passed 6 million other companies in 60 days

In late September ’09, I decided to seriously investigate and begin incorporating web 2.0 and social media into my company’s sales and marketing.  The inspiration for this one-man effort sprang from the passion, conviction and know-how of Stone Payton and Todd Schnick who interviewed me for their High Velocity Radio Show.

At that time, www.alexa.com told me that www.ypsgroup.com was the 10.2 millionth most popular web site in the world.  (I wasn’t impressed either.)  We implemented a blog that I post to 3 or 4 times a week.  I started working to increase the number of my LinkedIn connections with customers and prospects.  (That’s gone from 58 up to 161 which gives me almost 22,000 2nd degree connections.) I also joined 4 LinkedIn groups and began participating in the discussions.  (That generated a phone call from a total stranger in Denver who happens to be a VP for a company in my target market.  No deal yet, but things are moving in the right direction.)

As of today (12/5/09), alexa puts www.ypsgroup.com at #4,291,452.  I’m not sure how impressed I am with the actual rank, but I’ve gotta’ tell you it’s a lot of fun to talk about passing 6 million other web sites!

    Congrats on the progress Todd. I am still learning about the science of how one moves up the Alexa rankings, but I can tell you a more committed effort to produce good content – on a regular basis – combined with building relationships online – will result in movement in the right direction. But the true key? Discipline and a sustained effort – over time…
